Well, They DO Make It Exciting

August 9, 2001

So this rather unfortunate game began with Toronto taking an early lead on Freddy Garcia as Jose Cruz Jr. and that fetching goatee of his singled and then Alex Gonzalez singled and then Shannon Stewart grounded into a double play but that scored Jose and then Carlos Delgado singled before Raul Mondesi made the final out, so 1-0 going into the bottom half, and with 1 out, Mark McLemore walked and then stole second and then Edgar Martinez singled which scored Mac to tie the game and then John Olerud singled but the one run is all we get.

So second inning and Freddy gives up a harmless single to Darrin Fletcher and then we're down in order, so let us move along to the third inning where... Bret Boone made an error and Jose Cruz Jr. and his fetching goatee are safe at first and then Gonzalez singled again and then Stewart singled which scored Cruz and Freddy got Delgado to hit into a double play and then struck out Mondesi, but it is now 2-1 Toronto and I'm in shock because Bret doesn't make mistakes like that and anyway, we're down in order again.

So fourth inning and Brad Fullmer homered to make it 3-1 and then Freddy recovered nicely to get 2 K's and a ground out and we come up with a run in our half, as Bret walks with 1 out and then Mike Cameron singled and then Carlos Guillen hit a sac fly to score Bret, so 3-2 Toronto heading into the fifth.

Toronto is down in order thanks to a ground out and 2 K's, and then Seattle doesn't fair any better, so let us move along to the sixth where Brad Fullmer singled but then got caught stealing and then we tied the game thanks to John "I'm Goin Yard!" Olerud GOING YARD!! HOORAY!

So seventh inning, 3-all and Felipe Lopez walked and then Darrin Fletcher singled and then Homer Bush sacrificed the runners over and then Jose Cruz Jr. and his fetching goatee are intentionally walked and Gonzalez, bless his heart, grounds into a double play to make me very, very happy. Unfortunately, we waste Dan Wilson's 2-out double followed by Ichiro's intentional walk followed by Mac's walk to load the bases, as Paul Quantrill relieves Kelvim Escobar and Edgar Martinez is ROBBED of a base hit by Brad Fullmer which has me calling Fullmer all kinds of names.

Eighth inning and... I don't want to talk about it. David Bell made a very rare error and Stewart was safe and then... okay, seriously I don't know that I can get into all the particulars here, I mean let's just say seven years and a wild pitch from Norm Charlton later and it's 4-3 Toronto heading into our half, that's all you need to know. We do nothing. Ninth inning. Toronto scores 2 more runs, these ones off of Jose Paniagua and it is 6-3 Toronto now and I am having a big hissy fit about it, and then Billy Koch relieves Quantrill and with 1 out, Stan Javier singled and then with another out, Ichiro reached on an infield hit and then Mark McLemore singled and with the bases loaded, Edgar singled which scored 2 for us, but unfortunately, we come up 1 short and lose, 6-5. I swear profanely.
