So this rather horrific event began rather horrifically as we strand two in the first inning (Mark McLemore singled and Edgar Martinez walked) and then Baltimore is down in order and I am meanwhile having a complete tantrum that Jay Buhner is not in leftfield because I thought he was going to play as soon as we got to Baltimore and anyway, we go to the second inning with no score and with 1 out, Mike Cameron singled and then stole second and then David Bell grounds into a fielder's choice and Cammie gets caught in a rundown and we end up not scoring again and then Aaron Sele gave up a lead off walk to Jeff Conine and two outs later, Brady Anderson and his rather nice muscles walked before Brook Fordyce, bless his heart, struck out and while I am still in a fit over Jay, I pause long enough in my ranting to my dad to toss in a quick "and what's going on with Sele walking 2 batters in 1 inning?" before continuing.
So third inning and with 1 out, Mac singled and then an out later and John Olerud singled and we waste both of them which makes me say bad words but at least Baltimore doesn't fair any better as Melvin Mora singled with 1 out and I don't know how he singled because he and his wife just had quintuplets and if I were him I would be SO EXHAUSTED that I would have to like crawl up to the plate and I don't think I'd even be able to get up and swing at anything, I'd probably just fall asleep lying there and someone would have to come and take me off the field because I'm a pretty sound sleeper and I'm always cranky when I wake up so nobody likes to wake me up anyway and Mora was then out himself on a fielder's choice hit by Larry Bigbie, and Bigbie stole second and Chris Richard walked but they don't score either which made me very happy although I didn't much care for the walk to Bigbie because walks always make me nervous and can somebody please tell me WHY ISN'T JAY PLAYING, I HAVE BEEN WAITING SINCE DAY ONE WHEN I BOUGHT TICKETS OPENING NIGHT IN LEFTFIELD SINCE THAT IS WHERE JAY WOULD BE PLAYING NOW AND I DON'T CARE WHO'S PITCHING, PUT HIM OUT THERE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, HE IS HEALTHY AND READY AND THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS. JAY CAN HIT ANYBODY. Except Pedro Martinez, and that's only because Jay says so. I'd certainly never think such a thing.
So continuing on, fourth inning and we're down in order and then Baltimore wastes Cal Ripken Jr.'s single and how much am I going to miss Cal, I mean there is a class act if ever there was one, he's an outstanding player in addition to a loyal one who plays for love of the game instead of love of the bank account unlike SOME people who don't even deserve to play the same sport as Cal let alone be compared to him Alex Rodriguez and anyway we head to the fifth after 2 K's and a groundout and my father is trying to reason with me that maybe Jay isn't playing because they're not activating him until September 1st and I'm still not having it. FIVE MONTHS I HAVE WAITED.
We're down in order AGAIN and an out into Baltimore's half and Mora doubles and I am all "shouldn't you be too tired to do that!" only he evidently isn't and an out after that and Chris Richard reached on an infield single and that scored Mora and then Jeff Conine singled and Richard ended up at third on a rare error by Cammie and then... they pulled off a double steal and Richard stole home and I am shrieking indignantly about the whole thing and who do these guys think they are, us?
So sixth inning and I am really in a state because I'm still horrified at them having STOLEN HOME and we all know that I won't be getting over Jay not playing and we are down in order AGAIN and Baltimore tacks on another run in their half and I refuse, I absolutely REFUSE to get into the details of it because I've suffered enough today thank you very much.
So seventh inning of this positively wretched game and how bratty am I anyway, and we waste David Bell's single and then John Halama relieved Sele and retired the Orioles in order so we are quickly to the eighth and it is meanwhile totally POURING and that kind of came on all of a sudden, I mean they were expecting a storm but it all of a sudden was just dumping buckets of water on them and anyway, Buddy Groom relieved Calvin Maduro and Ichiro led off with an infield single but a double play and a strikeout later and it's Baltimore's turn and Halama retires them 1-2-3 again as Cal grounded out and Tony Batista grounded out and Brady and Brady's Big Old Muscles lined out and we head to the top of the ninth trailing 3-0 and it is raining so hard I don't know how they can even see to play and with 1 out, Willis Roberts relieved Groom and with 2 outs, they ended up calling the game because of the rain and all I can say is that I hope Jay is playing tomorrow because I really can't stand another day without him out there.
