M's Run Over Tampa Bay & Each Other

August 29, 2001

So this game started out much more like I've grown accustomed to Mariners games starting out as Ichiro led off with a single and then stole second and an out later stole third and then scored on a throwing error by the catcher and it always just kills me to see other teams scrambling and throwing the ball away in their panic to try and hold him up and anyway, Edgar Martinez singled and John Olerud doubled and then Bret Boone grounded out but that scored Edgar and we head to the bottom half leading 2-0 and Jamie Moyer retires the side in order very quietly.

So second inning and David Bell led things off with a walk and then Tom Lampkin singled but things got all crazy because David was still between first and second waiting to see if the ball would be caught and Tom was charging right past him and it was really quite funny the way they were running back and forth in this huge panic and Tommy ends up out for passing the runner and David ends up at second when the dust finally setlles and Ichiro grounded him over to third but that's as far as we can get him and Jamie retired the side in order again with a couple of K's.

"My catcher (Tom Lampkin) was running like the malt-liquor bull. I told (David Bell) he should have tripped him." -Lou Piniella

"I thought he (Bell) had seen Grieve drop it. I saw him stop. I thought he'd turn back and wind up at third. I was watching the field and deciding I could go for second. Then I heard him yell, `Lamp!' By that time it was too late, I was past him." -Tom Lampkin

So third inning and Edgar led off with a single, but a double play later and there's nobody on while Bret Boone reaches on an infield hit but then got caught stealing and Tampa Bay didn't fair any better as they wasted Ben Grieve's lead off single that was followed by 2 outs, a hit batter and a fly out.

Fourth inning, still 2-0 Seattle and we are down in order as are the Devil Rays, so fifth inning and we are down in order AGAIN and unfortunately, Randy Winn leads off with a triple and a ground out scored him, and we head to the sixth leading 2-1, and with 1 out, John Olerud singled and then Bret "I'm Goin Yard!" Boone WENT YARD to put us up 4-1 and evidently some really obnoxious fan had been heckling him before he hit it so as he crossed home plate, he blew the fan a little kiss which I found tremendously enjoyable.

So Tampa's turn and the batboy singled NO WAIT that is Tampa Bay leftfielder Jason Tyner who looks to be approximately 11 years old and anyway, a double play and a groundout later and it is the seventh inning.

We waste Ichiro's single and Tampa sits down 1-2-3 courtesy of Jamie "Earnest Little Lefthander" Moyer...

"When Moyer goes like this he reminds me off Tom Glavine. People think facing soft-tossers is easy. But when they have their stuff and hit their spots, they're tougher than hard throwers. I wouldn't want to face Jamie right now." -Bret Boone

So let us move right along to the eighth where Edgar "I'm Goin Yard Too!" Martinez just knocked one right on out of there and I have to say that Tropicana Field looks so much like the Kingdome when they pan to the ceiling that is really makes me nostalgic, and anyway, 5-1 Seattle going into the bottom half and Arthur Rhodes relieved Jamie and K'd the first two batters before getting Chris Gomez to ground out and end the inning.

Ninth inning and Bobby Seay relieved Tanyon Sturtze and retired us in order and Kazuhiro Sasaki came in to close it out and the batboy NO WAIT that is Tyner again, he reached on an infield single and then an out later and Steve Cox unfortunately doubled to score him, but Kazu settled down and retired the next two batters no problem and we win it 5-2 to even the series and avoid our first third loss in row.
