The Yankees Get Cameroned

August 19, 2001

"This club will not be intimidated." -Lou Piniella, on the 2001 Seattle Mariners

Now this is my kind of game. First inning and with 1 out, Carlos Guillen singled and then Edgar singled and then Carlos stole third and then Bret Boone singled to score him and Mike "I'm GOIN YARD!" Cameron WENT YARD and then Stan Javier doubled and two outs later we head to the bottom half leading 4-0 and Jamie Moyer gave up nothing but a harmless double, so second inning and Charles Gipson tripled to lead things off but we somehow manage not to score him and then the dealing Jamie Moyer sits the Yankees down in order which you've gotta love.

So third inning and Cammie singles, but that's as exciting as it gets and then Alfonso Soriano singled and stole second and an out later, he stole third but that was as far as he got, so still 4-0 Seattle as we head to the fourth where we waste Dan Wilson's single and then the Yankees manage to get a run but I'm not getting into how because a) I don't care to, b) it's not important and c) I'm a really poor sport.

So 4-1 heading into the fifth and with 1 out, Carlos singled and then Edgar singled and it's like the first inning all over again as Bret singled to score Carlos and then Cammie singled and it is now 6-1 Mariners as Jamie retires New York in order.

"As painful as it looks for Edgar Martinez to run the bases, the only pain involved is felt by opposing pitchers when he hits." -Bob Finnigan, sportswriter

Sixth inning and we're down 1-2-3 and the Yankees waste Tino Martinez's single and then seventh inning and this was SO COOL. Ichiro singled. Carlos walked. An out later and Jay Witasick relieved Andy Pettitte. Bret Boone walked to load the bases. And Mike "I'M GOIN YARD AGAIN, GRAND SLAM BABY!" Cameron WENT YARD to make it 10-1 Seattle and how much do I love Mike Cameron and all I can say is that it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy and speaking of nice guys, Jamie retired the Yankees in order again.

"For the second consecutive day, Mike Cameron didn't strike out. He struck back with four hits and eight RBIs." -John Hickey, sportwriter

"Moyer is pitching as well as I've ever seen him. He's throwing the ball inside, he's keeping his changeup down. And the results are there." -Lou Piniella

So eighth inning and Dan leads off with a single but we can't score him and then Ryan Franklin relieved Jamie and ended up giving up a run but I'm not getting into how because - well, see above, so ninth inning and Ted Lilly relieved Witasick and we're down in order and then a walk and three outs later and we have won the series as we win this game 10-2 and I am very, very, very happy.

And speaking of happy, happy birthday to my sister.

"It started out well Friday for the Yankees with a shutout victory. Even New York's dramatic, wrenching loss Saturday was dismissed as a freak, owing to a poor outing by a rookie pitcher who will not see the playoffs. But as the hardball festivities concluded yesterday, here was the measure: The Mariners won the game, 10-2; the series, 2-1; the season series, 6-3; and finished the regular season 5-1 in Yankee Stadium. So the Mariners get to hold up an index finger, while resisting the impulse to deploy a nearby digit to another sellout crowd, whose silence yesterday offered greater eloquence." -Art Thiel, sportswriter

"I think this weekend lent a lot of credence to what we've done - to this point. This series showed the character of our ballclub again, after losing the first game and coming back to take two from a good baseball team." -Lou Piniella

"It's always nice to come in here where it is such an honor to play, and play well, which is all we set out to do. It was good to win the series, but we have to continue to play well. No one is going to give us anything." -Jamie Moyer

"I think this series validated our season, but we think we validated it before. I think the Yankees are tough, a solid professional team that makes you make mistakes, and a tough team in the postseason, which I think they're going to be. But I also think they know we're a solid professional team that is going to be tough, too." -Bret Boone

"This was a good series between good teams. We don't die, and they don't die." -Dan Wilson

"New York is a very good team. But we are ready to play very well against them. I've always said that to win the World Series, if you are an American League team, you're going to have to go through Yankee Stadium." -Mike Cameron

"Jamie wins. He wins consistently, and that's no accident." -Lou Piniella

"I pitched my game today. Someone said I got only two ground ball outs? Well, I can't explain that, but I'll take outs anyway I can get them." -Jamie Moyer

"He patrols center field with the best of them. He has power, he has speed. If he cuts down his strikeouts, he'll hit .300. There's not much he can't do, and he's been getting better." -Lou Piniella on Mike Cameron

"Winning five of six [in Yankee Stadium], that says something to me about this team. We have a humble approach, but we know we can play." -Bret Boone

And just because it's funny...

"I asked the clubhouse guy to fix me a martini." -Lou Piniella, after yesterday’s game
